What is carpet underlay?
Carpet underlay is a layer of padding fitted between your carpet and the floor. It makes carpet softer underfoot, warmer and quieter, and helps it last longer by absorbing the wear from everyday footsteps.
Which carpet underlay is best?
For most homes, a quality 11–12 mm PU foam underlay, such as Cloud 9 Cumulus or Plushwalk 12mm, gives the best mix of comfort and insulation. For stairs and hallways, choose a denser 10–11 mm underlay. Tell us about your room and carpet and we’ll recommend the right one.
How thick should carpet underlay be?
12 mm is the most comfortable choice for bedrooms and living rooms. 10 mm is firmer and better for stairs and hallways. 8 mm is our best-value option. Avoid anything thinner than 8 mm, as it lacks cushioning and won’t protect your carpet well.
What carpet underlay do I need?
It depends on the room. Bedrooms and lounges suit thicker PU foam or thermal underlay, stairs and hallways need a dense rubber or felt underlay, flats benefit from acoustic underlay, and rooms with underfloor heating need a specialist UFH-compatible underlay.
Can I reuse my old carpet underlay?
Sometimes. If your old underlay is still in good condition, our fitters will tell you honestly whether it can stay, which can save you money. Underlay that’s flattened, crumbling or damp should be replaced, as it won’t support or protect your new carpet.
How do you fit carpet underlay?
Underlay is laid flat over the whole floor, foam or rubber side down depending on the type, trimmed to size and taped at the joins, with gripper strips around the edges. The carpet is then stretched over the top. If you’d rather not do it yourself, we can supply and fit it with your new carpet.
Do you deliver carpet underlay?
Yes. You can collect underlay the same day from our Manchester showroom, or we can deliver single rolls and bulk orders across the UK.
How much does carpet underlay cost?
Our standard carpet underlay costs £2.99 per square metre for 8 mm, £3.49 per square metre for 10 mm and £3.99 per square metre for 12 mm. Cloud 9 and other branded underlays are priced separately, so ask in store or call us for a price. If we’re fitting your carpet, the underlay is included in your free quote.
Can you use carpet underlay for laminate?
No. Carpet underlay is too soft for laminate and can damage the joints. Use an underlay made for laminate, which is thinner, denser and moisture-resistant.
